7/27/02- Revs Hold On To Early Lead
By Sean
Washington, D.C. - With the return of Carlos Llamosa and 7 great saves by Adin Brown, the Revs were able to hold off a barrage of DC United attacks to win 1-0 in front of about 24,000 fans. DCs scoreless streak was extended to 331 minutes with the shut-out.
The Revolution started off great, dominating the possession and keeping the ball in their offensive half leaving DC only a few counter-attacks. However, DC got the first chance of the game in the 13th minute when Peter Villegas shot from 35-yards out and forced Revs keeper Adin Brown to parry it out of bounds. On the resulting corner kick, Jim Rooney had to clear the ball off the Revolutions goal line.
The first and only goal of the match was scored in the 16th minute off of a Steve Ralston corner kick. Ralston crossed the ball to Ian Fuller who headed it at goal, but his header was deflected to Jay Heaps. Heaps then shot from 10-yards out. His shot was deflected off of Ivan Mckinley, but still found its way to the back of the net. Ralstons assist was his 15th of the season, tying former Rev Joe-Max Moore for the Revs single season assist record.
After the goal, DC controlled the game. Ivan McKinley had a chance in the 25th minute when he ran down the field unmarked. His diving header from a Bobby Convey cross went just wide.
In the 29th minute, DC completed many passes inside the Revolution box. The Revs could not gain possession resulting in a shot by MLS newcomer Eliseo Quintanilla. His 15-yard shot was saved by Brown.
3 minutes later, in the 32nd minute, Quintanilla headed the ball to Richie Williams, who could not get full control of the ball before Brown stole it.
Hoping to add an insurance goal before the half, Rev coach Steve Nicol brought on last years scoring champion Alex Pineda Chacon to replace Ian Fuller in the 40th minute.
At the beginning of the second half, DC coach Ray Hudson brought on midfielder Ben Olsen for his first league match appearance since 2000. He almost scored in the 56th minute when he beat Leo Cullen on a Quintanilla pass, but his shot went just wide.
In the 59th minute, still hoping for an insurance goal, the Revs brought on Wolde Harris to replace Braeden Cloutier.
MLS All-Star selection Taylor Twellman had a chance on a breakaway run in the 65th minute, forcing DC goalie Nick Rimando to make a diving save.
In the 78th, minute Eddie Pope was brought in to play as a forward replacing Ben Olsen. Many attacks followed as DC outshot the Revs 18-8.
New England 7-12-1, 22pts, moved ahead of DC into 4th place with the win and will play Los Angeles on August 10th at 10pm after the All-Star break.
